According to Wikipedia, the recipe was originally used by the natives of Brazil, against the flu. 

The name of the cocktail is derived from the Brazilian word "caipira", a condescending term used for addressing poor farmers.

At Manhattn, we decided not to add anything to this historical drink to preserve it's original flavors. 

Based on Brazilian Cachaça, lime and sugar cane.
